Bright Blue responds to Justine Greening’s speech at Conservative Party Conference.

Commenting on the Education Secretary’s speech, Ryan Shorthouse, Director of Bright Blue said:

“Extra funding to improve educational attainment in six Opportunity Areas is very welcome. Funding for these areas should be prioritised on attracting and retaining the highest quality staff in preschool settings and schools.

“Better teachers, not more grammar schools, will help social mobility. The evidence is clear: poorer kids do worse in aggregate in selective areas than their peers in non-selective areas. And bright kids from modest backgrounds can do just as well in good comprehensives as grammar schools.”
