Greater and greener development

By 2024 Events, Events

Bright Blue’s next public panel event is titled ‘Greater and greener development.’

The event will be used to finalise a major Bright Blue project on greater and greener development of housing and infrastructure. In the project, we have aimed to reconcile two key objectives in housing and infrastructure policy: the socioeconomic (such as more and affordable homes for young people, and more secure and affordable energy) and the environmental (such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving biodiversity).

Bright Blue commissioned independent experts to provide original analysis and policy recommendations in two key areas. The first paper examined how to secure more homes, ready for net zero. The second paper considered building resilient neighbourhoods, powered by low-carbon energy.

Off the back these papers, this event will launch a major new polling report into UK public attitudes on policies to achieve greater and greener development.

Speakers

  • Lee Rowley MP, Minister of State for Housing
  • The Rt Hon Therese Coffey MP, Former Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs
  • Emma Gatten, Environmental Editor, The Telegraph
  • Sam Hall, Director, Conservative Environment Network (CEN)
  • Bartek Staniszewski, Senior Researcher, Bright Blue
  • Ben Kentish, Presenter, LBC (Chair)

Key questions

  • How can planning policy help achieve net zero?
  • Are planning and environmental policy priorities allies or enemies?
  • How important is new development in achieving future environmental goals?
  • Are environmental considerations featured enough in existing planning policy?
  • What technologies will be pivotal to future green development?
  • Is it possible to build the homes and infrastructure we need without generating embodied carbon that exceeds our carbon budget?
  • Can greener development overcome local opposition to new developments?
  • How to densify neighbourhoods without exacerbating climate risks involved with high population density?

Date and time

Monday 4th March 2024, 18:30 – 20:00

Location

The event will be held in Committee Room 17, Palace of Westminster, Houses of Parliament, St Margaret Street, Cromwell Green entrance, London, SW1A 0AA
