Bright Blue TV: The future of conservatism

By 2022 Events

To watch the video click here

For hundreds of years, the Conservative Party has been a successful – sometimes uneasy – coalition of different strands of conservatism. Five Prime Ministers have come and gone in the space of just six years, bringing with them differing visions of conservatism. In recent years, both libertarians and communitarians have both been in charge of the Conservative Government.

Under the new Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, what strand of conservative thought will be most likely to tackle the economic and geopolitical uncertainties we face, and deliver another electoral victory?

This episode of Bright Blue TV will see the UK Director of More in Common UK, Luke Tryl, Deputy Editor of ConservativeHome, Henry Hill, and Deputy Editor of CapX, Alys Denby, discuss ‘The future of conservatism’ with Bright Blue’s Researcher, Ioana Diac, as host.

Date:

Thursday 10th November 2022, 15:00pm – 15:30pm.

Bright Blue TV: Is Brexit too bureaucratic?

By 2022 Events

To watch the video click here

After two and a half years outside the EU, the debate remains over whether Brexit has been as liberating as many had hoped for.

Proponents point to the speed of our Covid-19 vaccine rollout. Critics cite the bottlenecks and red-tape in UK supply chains.

It’s not just Remainers who are frustrated. There is also disappointment from Brexiteers that the UK Government has been too timid with its new-found freedoms. Conservative leadership candidates have promised a “red-tape bonfire” to finally free UK businesses from the EU’s legacy.

Can Brexit still be a success, by diverging further away from EU rules and regulations, or by re-setting the partnership for renewed economic convergence and strategic cooperation?

This episode of Bright Blue TV will see Director of The UK in a Changing Europe, Anand Menon, Director of Labour for a People’s Vote, Mike Buckley, and Financial Columnist for The Daily Telegraph, Matthew Lynn, discuss the impact and future of Brexit with Bright Blue’s Senior Communications Officer, Max Anderson, as host.

Bright Blue TV: Rwanda – deterrent or disastrous?

By 2022 Events

To watch the video click here

Last year, tens of thousands of asylum seekers tried to enter the UK, either by boat or by lorry.

In response, the UK Government announced the Migration and Economic Development Partnership with Rwanda. The aim of the scheme is to instantly move asylum seekers to Rwanda to claim asylum, in the hope this deters people making treacherous journeys to the UK.

However, concerns have been raised – over the cost, legality and effectiveness of the scheme.

This episode of Bright Blue TV will see Professor Maria Sobolewska, Professor of Political Science at the University of Manchester, Bella Sankey, Director of Detention Action, and Alp Mehmet, Chair of Migration Watch UK, explore the future of the Rwanda asylum scheme with Bright Blue’s Chief Executive, Ryan Shorthouse, as host.

Bright Blue TV: Combating the cost of living crisis

By 2022 Events

To watch the video click here

As Ukraine’s wheat exports grind to a halt and countries look to cut off Russian oil and gas imports to defund Putin’s war machine, inflation has spiked and pushed some countries to the brink. The UK is no exception with inflation reaching the highest rate in 40 years as fuel prices soar.

After an underwhelming Spring Statement, Chancellor Rishi Sunak finally acted as pressure mounted to do more to help those most affected by the cost of living crisis. Now, the Government has announced the Energy Price Levy (windfall tax), long and loudly called for by Labour, and provided £15 billion of support, particularly to assist the poorest. However, with inflation rising and many predicting recession, are these support packages going to be enough? As minds turn to the Autumn budget and the looming energy price cap increase, what measures must the Government take to ensure stagflation is avoided, those who need support receive it, and businesses and consumers are prepared for greater economic pain?

This episode of Bright Blue TV will see former Secretary of State for Education, the Rt Hon Justine Greening, Associate Director of the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, Helen Barnard, Economics Correspondent for The Guardian, Richard Partington, and Head of Research for the Adam Smith Institute, Daniel Pryor, explore these questions, with Bright Blue’s Senior Research Fellow, Phoebe Arslanagić-Wakefield, as host.

We are delighted to invite you to join an online Bright Blue public panel event entitled ‘After the White Paper: levers for levelling up

Following the publication of the Levelling Up White Paper, which sought to develop the agenda into a more coherent and detailed policy programme, the Government is determined to show that it is making progress on delivering for the ‘left-behind’ areas that gave the Conservatives a majority at the 2019 general election. With the next general election approaching, how much levelling up will have been achieved, what are the levers by which that will happen, and will it be enough?

Key questions:

  • Does the levelling up agenda constitute an ideological shift in the Conservative Party from a greater emphasis on the individual to a greater emphasis on community?
  • How much levelling up will have occurred by the time of the next general election, and what will that look like for new Conservative voters?
  • What has the White Paper told us about the distinct character of the levelling up agenda compared to previous regeneration attempts?
  • How much of the decision-making for levelling up will be made in Whitehall, and how much will be made at the local level by left-behind communities?
  • How can a so-called left-behind area be fully regenerated and what are the key local institutions that can help deliver this?
  • Is social infrastructure a prerequisite for economic prosperity, or is economic prosperity a prerequisite for social infrastructure?
  • What levers are available from the public, private, and third sectors to level up, and how can these work better together at a community level?
  • What role can community-based organisations such as housing associations play in the development and delivery of levelling up?
