Bright Blue responds to the Government’s decision to give mayors a greater share of locally generated revenues, as called for in Bright Blue’s 2026 report, Liberalism liberated: Revitalising a traditional and richer liberalism for a better Britain.
Dr Will Prescott, Head of Research at Bright Blue, commented:
“While the UK’s gradual embrace of regional devolution has improved accountability and boosted economic growth, until now it has failed to include one crucial ingredient: a meaningful share of locally generated tax revenue.
By giving mayors a portion of the income raised in their cities and regions, not only will they finally be able to direct resources more efficiently but, because tax revenues are directly proportionate to economic output, they will have a direct incentive to embrace pro-growth policies.”
Bright Blue had previously called for central government to allow a share of the taxes generated within the regional economy, to be retained locally.
