The Government has this week announced a £343m government and industry-backed aviation research and development drive, including £58m for pioneering electric flight initiative.

Bright Blue, the independent think tank for liberal Conservatism, recommended in , a report released in May 2018, that the Government should increase public research and development spending on new hybrid and electric planes, as well as sustainable bio jet fuels.

Commenting, Ryan Shorthouse, Director of Bright Blue, said:

“Supporting research and development for the electrification and decarbonisation of planes will provide significant commercial and environmental benefits, especially at a time when a significant proportion of the public are concerned about the impacts of aviation pollution from the expansion of Heathrow Airport”.
