We are delighted to invite you to join an online Bright Blue public panel event entitled ‘Home truths: reforming property taxes in the UK’.

The discussion will centre on the findings of a major new Bright Blue paper, authored by academics Professor Paul Cheshire and Professor Christian Hilber, diagnosing the shortcomings of the current system of English property system, specifically Stamp Duty and Council Tax, before assessing the economic impact and political feasibility of a number of property tax proposals.

This report has been commissioned by a high-profile cross-party, cross-sector commission established by Bright Blue to advise on reforms to the tax system in the years ahead to support the post-COVID economic recovery, the restoration of the public finances, and the achievement of better economic, social and environmental outcomes.

The key questions that this webinar panel will explore are:

  • What are the shortcomings of the current system of taxing residential property in the UK?
  • What should reform of property taxes aim to achieve?
  • What role can property tax reform play in driving the post-COVID-19 recovery?
  • How can property tax reform address regional inequalities and deliver a ‘levelling up’ agenda?
  • Is there a way of reforming property taxes that benefits tenants and first-time buyers without discouraging land development?
  • Can property tax reform boost home ownership among the young?
  • Is there an option for property tax reform that can command cross-party support?
  • How can political momentum for property tax reform be generated and maintained?

The key speakers are:

  • Kevin Hollinrake MP, Leader of the Property Research Group
  • Rt Hon Dame Margaret Hodge MP, Former Chair, Public Accounts Committee
  • Professor Paul Cheshire, Emeritus Professor of Economic Geography, LSE
  • Andrew Dixon, Founder and Chairman, Fairer Share
  • Carol Lewis, Deputy Property Editor, The Times
  • Ryan Shorthouse, Chief Executive, Bright Blue (Chair)

This event is free and open to all. You can watch it via the link above, but you can register for updates and reminders on Eventbrite here. Contact Weronika Patyk at weronika@brightblue.org.uk if you have any queries.
