The Government has announced that the new Domestic Abuse Bill will make it a criminal offence to breach a Domestic Abuse Protection Order (DAPO), with a maximum penalty of five years’ imprisonment, an unlimited fine, or both.

Bright Blue, the independent think tank for liberal Conservatism, recommended in a report released in July 2017 to make such breaches a criminal offence to strengthen protection for victims of domestic violence.

Commenting, Ryan Shorthouse, Director of Bright Blue, said:

“Domestic violence and abuse is a significant problem in the UK. This is a welcome and necessary step to deter offenders from continuing a campaign of misery.”
