The Office for National Statistics has announced that everyone aged 16 and over will be asked in the 2021 Census if they wish to declare their gender identity.

Bright Blue, the independent think tank for liberal Conservatism, recommended in, a report released in July 2017, that the Government should gather data on the prevalence of transgender and non-binary genders in the UK through the Census.

Commenting, Ryan Shorthouse, Director of Bright Blue, said:

    “It is important to try and better understand the nature and scale of transgender identities in the UK. Good evidence should be the bedrock of our views and policymaking.”
