The Government has just appointed Lord Ahmed of Wimbledon, Minister of State in the Foreign Office, as the Prime Minister’s Special Envoy on Freedom of Religion or Belief, a policy originally recommended by Bright Blue, the independent think tank for liberal conservatism.

The role, which supports the Prime Minister’s commitment to religious tolerance in the UK, will demonstrate the country’s commitment to religious freedom by promoting inter-faith respect and dialogue internationally.

Commenting, Ryan Shorthouse, Director of Bright Blue, said:

“The persecution of individuals because of their religion is worsening around the world. Appointing a Special Envoy on Freedom of Religion or Belief, as originally recommended by Bright Blue, will rightly ensure and demonstrate that freedom of expression and belief is a key priority for the foreign policy of ‘Global Britain’”.
