Government adopts Bright Blue policy of lifting the temporary cap on university places

Bright Blue, the independent think tank for liberal conservatism, responds to the Government’s announcement that it is withdrawing the cap introduced for university admissions

Commenting, Ryan Shorthouse, Director of Bright Blue, said:

The best decision the Education Secretary has made throughout this fiasco is the lifting of the temporary cap on student numbers at universities. The original justification for it was made redundant last week to be honest, as demand both from home and overseas students did not fall off a cliff, but better late than never.

The truth is that either grading system used for this year’s A-levels, algorithm-led or teacher-led, is flawed. Both systems are deeply unfair on different groups of hard-working pupils. The A-level grades this year will forever be seen as erroneous.

So young people need to be allowed to move on from this unfortunate episode in education. That means more school leavers being accepted into university, this year and next, so the class of COVID-19 can improve their learning and long-term prospects.

This is a policy win for Bright Blue, which called for the withdrawing of the cap on university admissions.
