A real choice? The virtual Parliament beyond the pandemic

By 2021 Events

You can watch the recording here.

We are delighted to invite you to join an online Bright Blue public panel event.

This discussion will focus on how virtual measures in Parliament allowed for more inclusive participation of MPs in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet as we return to normality, should the option of remote participation in Parliament be retained? Doing so may better support MPs who suffer from ill health, have caring or childcare responsibilities, or simply want to spend more time in their constituencies. Our panellists will discuss the advantages, disadvantages, and effects of virtual measures in Parliament, and what we could lose if virtual measures are removed.

Speakers:

  • The Rt Hon Karen Bradley MP, Chair, Procedure Select Committee
  • The Rt Hon Lord Anderson of Ipswich, Former Independent Reviewer of Terrorism Legislation
  • Resham Kotecha, Head of Engagement, Women2Win
  • Dr Jessica C. Smith, Lecturer in Politics, Southampton University, and co-author of the Hybrid Parliament report.
  • Phoebe Arslanagić-Wakefield, Researcher at Bright Blue (Chair)

Key questions:

  • What impact would a hybrid Parliament system have on the range and type of candidates who stand to become MPs?
  • Which social groups would particularly benefit from a hybrid Parliament system?
  • Would the option of virtual participation in Parliament see MPs spend more time in their constituencies?
  • Could a hybrid Parliament system be part of eroding the concept that MPs are detached, Westminster elites?
  • Given that the public support the option of virtual participation by MPs in Parliament after the pandemic, what barriers prevent adoption of this policy?

Date: Tuesday 15 June 2021, 12:00 – 13:00

Venue: Online on our YouTube channel here.

Home truths: reforming property taxes in the UK

By 2021 Events, Events

You can watch the recording here.

We are delighted to invite you to join an online Bright Blue public panel event entitled ‘Home truths: reforming property taxes in the UK’.

The discussion will centre on the findings of a major new Bright Blue paper, authored by academics Professor Paul Cheshire and Professor Christian Hilber, diagnosing the shortcomings of the current system of English property system, specifically Stamp Duty and Council Tax, before assessing the economic impact and political feasibility of a number of property tax proposals.

This report has been commissioned by a high-profile cross-party, cross-sector commission established by Bright Blue to advise on reforms to the tax system in the years ahead to support the post-COVID economic recovery, the restoration of the public finances, and the achievement of better economic, social and environmental outcomes.

The key questions that this webinar panel will explore are:

  • What are the shortcomings of the current system of taxing residential property in the UK?
  • What should reform of property taxes aim to achieve?
  • What role can property tax reform play in driving the post-COVID-19 recovery?
  • How can property tax reform address regional inequalities and deliver a ‘levelling up’ agenda?
  • Is there a way of reforming property taxes that benefits tenants and first-time buyers without discouraging land development?
  • Can property tax reform boost home ownership among the young?
  • Is there an option for property tax reform that can command cross-party support?
  • How can political momentum for property tax reform be generated and maintained?

The key speakers are:

  • Kevin Hollinrake MP, Leader of the Property Research Group
  • Rt Hon Dame Margaret Hodge MP, Former Chair, Public Accounts Committee
  • Professor Paul Cheshire, Emeritus Professor of Economic Geography, LSE
  • Andrew Dixon, Founder and Chairman, Fairer Share

Bright Blue TV: China: friend or foe?

By 2021 Events, Events, Nikita Malik

Join Bright Blue on Friday afternoon for the next episode of Bright Blue TV on the theme: China: friend or foe?

The rise of China as a global economic and military superpower is one of the great geopolitical developments of our time. Tensions between China and the West have been rising in recent years, not least over the Chinese Government’s treatment of the Uighur minority and the erosion of freedoms in Hong Kong. Under the Communist Party, China has put forward a rival political and economic model to upend the liberal democratic settlement which has existed since the end of the Cold War. This has led the recent Integrated Review to label China as a ‘systemic challenge’ to the United Kingdom and its allies. While some of the activities of China’s authoritarian regime have attracted condemnation in the West, it remains an indispensable partner for tackling global problems like the climate crisis. The UK is, therefore, forced to grapple with the dilemma: to what extent is China a partner, competitor or threat?

This episode of Bright Blue TV is hosted by Deputy Director of Bright Blue, Nikita Malik. She will be joined by the Founder and Chief Executive of Hong Kong Watch, Benedict Rogers, the Broadcast Editor and China reporter for The Spectator, Cindy Yu, and the Chair of the All Party Parliamentary China Group, Richard Graham MP.

You do not need a ticket. To watch the livestream, simply click here at 12:00pm on Wednesday. Submit questions before or during the event via Slido here.
